Description
Your bid is for the September 1949 issue of TRAINS Magazine, which is Volume 9, Number 12. This standard-sized issue measures 21.0 by 28.5 cm and contains 68 busy pages with Willard V. Anderson as Editor. The cover is self-explanatory.... how well I remember this observation car as I was born in Palmer, Massachusetts, and watched it go by so many times. I dreamed of the day I'd be wealthy enuf to go First Class ... and by that time it was Penn Central and the Post Road Branch and Albany Union Station were history. End of mini-story. In RN&EC, Editor Anderson discusses nationization, airlines, and the 40-hour week as 01 September 1949 is the big day when the rail's give up the 48-hour work week. Talk about job creation! Southern is scrapping steam wholesale and individual engine numbers are listed; Budd finishes a 239 stainless steel car order from New York Central; Casey Jones may appear on a postage stamp (he did); and Lima-Hamilton builds its first diesel-electric locomotive. LET'S GO TO THE FAIR is a 3 page staff article about the 1948 Chicago Railroad Fair as it continues into 1949 and includes 8 photos. DIESEL vs. DIESEL by David P. Morgan is about the new F-7 and E-8's and how EMD is trying to sell them, not to replace steam, but to prevent its competitors from weakening its market share. On 3 pages, including 7 photos, and a small E-8 side-view drawing. WILMINGTON with photos by R.H. Braun and W.P. Fisher is all about this Delaware city in a 4 page photo story with 9 photos and 3 of those are shown below. UNCLE SAM'S RAILROAD by Guy Zalbourg is about the Alaskan Railroad on 4 pages with a small map and 6 photos. Read this before you go to see how things have changed since the steam era. PASSENGER SERVICE: IT CAN BE PROFITABLE by John S. Gallagher, Jr. who was employed as a New Haven RR Passenger Research Assistant. This article covers 5 pages and includes 4 photos and 2 drawings. PHOTO SECTION covers 8 pages and features a centerfold of the Empire Builder being pulled backwards into St. Paul Union Station as Mountain-type No. 2516 enjoys the ride on the headpin; Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, in 1894 as the Ahnapee & Western arrives in town; a bullet car on the P&W; and, finally, LVT's Liberty Bell Limited. The latest in 2-8-4's are delivered to NKP from Lima and are the locomotives of the month rating a full-page and a fine builder's photo. THROUGH THE ROCKIES by Associate Editor David P. Morgan takes us aboard the D&RGW, behind steam and diesel power on 3 per cent grades, over 10 pages with a great full-page D.A. Strassman map and 7 photos. DPM having a great time on a truly great railroad. Don't miss this one! INSPECTION LOCOMOTIVE is a 2 page staff piece showing photos of five of these strange specialized critters. NO CLICKETY-CLACK is yet another 2 pager staff piece with 6 photos, showing how rail is welded and handled in long sections. RPO and the usual shorts complete this issue. Full-page ads by M&StL, AAR, Timken, F-M, N&W, 6 New England RR's, Southern and EMD with a half-pager by Lima still selling steam. I think this was the last steam builder TRAINS ad... ever.
