Description
Your bid is for the October 1949 issue of TRAINS Magazine, which is Volume 9, Number 12. This standard-sized issue measures 21.0 by 28.5 cm and contains 68 pages with Willard V. Anderson as Editor. The front cover shows UP's new Alco-GE gas turbine entering Denver with Train No. 52. RN&EC begins with an extensive piece on: The decline and fall of PRR steam power; then continues with: A solvent Jersey Central?; Rio Grande vs. Union Pacific; N&W orders a 4-8-4-8 steam turbine-electric; CPR building a new 35-stall roundhouse in Montreal and much more. C&NW's BIG SHOW is a 3 page staff photo story about Madison Street Terminal in steam commuter days. A nice interior shot of Lake Street Tower is included, along with 4 more photos and a "situation" drawing. I sure do miss those form C&NW semaphore bridges for my changing-trains-in-Chicago entertainment. PRR VENTURES IN LOCOMOTIVES is a 5 page staff article with 20 thoroughly captioned photos of various PRR machines, ranging from E-1 Mother Hubbard Atlantic No. 700 to R-l 4-8-4 psgr electric No. 4999, that did not fit in with General W.W. Atterbury's idea of standardization of everything that the Pennsylvania Railroad put on rails. CANADIAN NATIONAL by Editor Willard V. Anderson is an 11 page definitive work on what has now been increasing described as the world's best managed railway. T'was not always so. But read all about it over 60 years ago in this fine article illustrated with large maps spread over 4 pages and 12 photographs. PHOTO SECTION covers 8 pages and features the California Zephyr on an employee training trip in Niles Canyon; Milwaukee's hometown engine terminal; a Niagara about to enter the Bear Mountain Tunnel; and 2 full pages of 5 photos on the Louisville & Nashville, Old Reliable. TEXAS ZEPHYR by David P. Morgan is a 5 page work on the Burlington's Denver to Dallas service. 3 photos and a Strassman map are included. THE LOST GENERATION is a one pager, COURTESY NEW YORK TIMES, that will give you pause. CAROLINA RAILROADING is a 2 page staff feature on the Charleston & Western Carolina, including 5 photos. THE RISE AND FALL OF THE INTERURBAN by David A. Strassman covers this subject with flair over 6 pages, illustrated with a fine drawing by the author and 7 photos. RPO and the usual shorts finish this issue. Full page ads by AAR, SP, D&RGW, ERIE, 6 NE RR's, F-M, M&St.L, EMD and CRI&P. LIMA and steam are dead, effective with this issue, and Lima-Hamilton advertises: This is our switcher! This magazine is in excellent, museum-quality condition. The spine is professionally protected against deterioration and contamination with Scotch No.845 Book Tape.Your satisfaction guaranteed.
