Description
In very good condition. This is a Top-Quality CD of 901 train order images from the Southern Pacific Railroad and its Texas and Louisiana predecessor, the Texas & New Orleans Railway. This CD covers train order (and related) images from the state of Texas only. Louisiana is on the horizon.Included are 5 station lists showing each number of images available from that location. Also included are 15 employee timetable pages that cover all of this territory, so you can see where each location was, with respect to the others. This was all train order territory in the old days. In later years the main line from El Paso to San Antonio began to become CTC east of El Paso. By the time train orders disappeared, around 1986, many of the main lines in Texas on the SP were still run by train orders. Even in CTC territory, trains received slow orders and clearance cards, even without running authority because of the CTC.
There are 163 different locations represented here, with at least one train order image from each one. There are 104 different Southern Pacific locations, and 59 different T&NO locations. The T&NO was absorbed into the SP on November 1, 1961, so every order before this date was a T&NO order, even though they always used the SP forms, for many years without any company name being shown. This was finally remedied in 1976 or 1977 when SP decided to show their stuff and put the company name on their train order forms.
There are 715 train order images from the Southern Pacific and 186 from the T&NO.
Ages of the orders range from 1903 to 1985. I am very thankful to have obtained these orders before the SP and other roads did away with them entirely. Many of these stations and towers were closed in the 1950's and 1960's. Those that remained open, still copied a lot of train orders, as traffic was always fairly heavy in this whole area.
Where they fit, I included clearance cards with complete sets of orders on both Railroads. I didn't show too many of these, as clearance cards are basically a recap of all the orders listed, but did give trains authority to move. All trains had to be cleared before proceeding.
The 12 pictures shown are just a sampling of the quantity and variety of locations, operators' names, engine numbers (a few steam) and other operations unique to this large and very interesting piece of Railroad.
This CD shows many track conditions, operating procedures, and many meets and flag orders, all consistent with train-order operation. This is some of the best Railroad reading anywhere.
Very nice items that are obsolete and no longer used by any Railroad.
