    Description

Your bid is for the August 1936 issue of RAILROAD STORIES Magazine, which is Volume 20, Number 3, of the 1929 series of RAILROAD MAGAZINE that was published under at least seven different titles 1906-79. This digest-sized publication, by the Frank A. Munsey Company of 280 Broadway in New York City, measures 17.5 by 24.8 cm and contains 148 pages, plus the wraps. The cover painting by Emmett Watson(?) is titled: 1880 --- Bound for the Golden West. And is one of my favorites. Which I shall repeat next month also. This issue begins with what folks usually voted as the best feature in the magazine: a Novelette by E.S. Dellinger and this one is called THE LAW OF THE HIGH IRON and is spread over 29 pages. The editor didn't publish Dellinger every month because he liked him, it was the readers who decided. THE OLD COLORADO MIDLAND by Linwood Moody finds our favorite Maine writer far from home as he tackles this complex standard gauge road that he must have found of equal interest to anything to be found in Maine. This definitive article devotes 17 pages to this 335 mile road that ran from Colorado Springs to Grand Junction and never should have been torn up. You'll find 2 full page maps and 7 photos and 4 drawings to help you decide whether you agree with me or not. FIFTEEN KILLED BY RUNAWAY TENDER is a sad tale on a single page that occurred near Illecillewaet, 36 miles east of Revelstoke, British Columbia, on the Canadian Pacific Railway on 02 March 1936. BRASS BUTTONS is Fiction by Ed Pugsley over 8 pages. RAILROAD-CRAZY by G.A. Lathrop, Ex-Fireman on the Narrow-Gage D.&R.G.W., needs no introduction to the connoisseurs of fine railroad fiction. This illustrated piece is spread over 10 pages. LOCOMOTIVES OF THE COLORADO MIDLAND are rostered on 2 pages, including 5 photos. FAMOUS ENGINEERS details The Millionaire Hogger, Lew Hutton. TESTING THE IRON HORSE by Frederick Westing describes Pennsylvania Railroad's fascinating Altoona Testing Plant over 5 pages, including a photo and a drawing. This was the only locomotive testing plant in the Americas that ran on a full-time bais. The 100th Anniversary of the Chicago & North Western rates mention on 3/4ths of a page by Alden E. Miller. THE PERFECT TIMECARD by James W. Earp is Fiction on 11 pages. TRUE TALES of the RAILS begins with RAILROAD PRESIDENTS I HAVE KNOWN by W.B. Berry and features Sir Thomas Shaughnessy of the CPR, Jim Hill who needs no introduction and Chauncey M. Depew of the New York Central. This is great reading over 4 pages if you love railroad people stories. MULLIGAN STEW by Antone Martin tells of the hobo life on 5 pages. They were homeless men, bums if you prefer, but also could be truthfully called migrant workers. Anyway, this piece is all about what they ate! TRACK-WALKER by James Deegan is the short, short story of Southern Pacific's self-appointed hobo track inspector, J.S. Stockham. The only pay he accepted for his important job was lunch. THE ENGINE PICTURE KID IN ALASKA by the Engine Picture Kid is Fiction over 10 pages. CANADA'S FIRST RAILWAY fills a page with the Champlain & St. Lawrence story that began operating on 21 July 1836. ON THE SPOT covers 11 pages with historical tidbits, trivia, brief stories and fascinating photos such as a Central Vermont 700 Texas-type nearly upside down in the Dog River at Northfield, Vermont. And much more in this great historical publication. This magazine is in excellent condition as these old pulps go. The spine is professionally protected against deterioration and contamination with Scotch No.845 Book Tape.
