Description
Your bid is for the Railway and Locomotive Historical Society RAILROAD HISTORY No. 222, with a publication cover date of SPRING-SUMMER 2020. This standard-magazine-sized book measures 21.0 by 26.7 cm and contains 128 pages, plus the wraps, with Peter A. Hansen as Editor / Publisher. The front cover shows East Broad Top RR No.15 operating a scheduled excursion train in 2006. Sally and I rode what was probably the same train the following year. In Editor’s Seatbox, R&LHS President, Robert Holzweiss, informs all readers that this will be Peter Hansen’s last issue as he was suffering from a malignant brain tumor. Peter subsequently died on 15 May 2020 at age 62. Deputy Editor, Dan Cupper, will become the RRH editor, with Kevin Holland as Deputy Editor. In SHORT TAKES, “East Broad Top charts a secure future” as the EBT Foundation, Inc. takes over from the Kovalchick family by purchasing the railroad, buildings and rolling stock. This article covers 6 pages and contains 11 color photos , plus an EBT timeline that began in 1856. WHEN STEAM ROADS BURNED OIL. AN ENERGY TRANSITION AND ITS LIMITS by Mark Aldrich takes a 16 page look at when and why some railroads converted locomotives from burning coal to oil, and why most did not. And those that did, seldom did so system wide. A lot of variables here to contemplate. THE WIDOW’S CASE: Crawford v. New York, Chicago & St. Louis Railroad by Christopher Manthey takes a detailed look at an 1898 case whereas a conductor fell off his caboose in Kimball, Ohio, and died. His widow sued the Nickel Plate RR alleging negligence and blamed everything possible: bad caboose, slack action, incompetent engineer and train order signal operator, etc. Did she win? Read these 10 pages to find out. MODERN RAILROAD MERGERS by James W. Hanscom and David E. Hanscom is a 24 page analysis of what happened, what did not, and more or less some of the why’s and wherefores that brought us to the present day situation. 14 representative photographs of locomotives in color will help you get the picture. THE WEST POINT FOUNDERY ASSOCIATION. AMERICA’s FIRST LOCOMOTIVE BUILDER by Ray State and Albert Rutherford explains this New York City business that started building locomotives in 1830. Much conjecture and 18 illustrations on these 22 pages will get you up to speed. CENTURY-BROADWAY by Dan Cupper and Christopher Baer reproduces a very detailed report by a PRR “spy” who rode the 20th
Century Limited from New York to Chicago on 3 February 1921 for the sole purpose of comparing NYC’s finest service with PRR’s Broadway Limited. Which our PRR psgr traffic rep rode the following day from Chicago to Philadelphia. A most candid and enjoyable document as this article covers 14 pages, including illustrations of the period. BOOK DIVISION begins on page 96 with Boss of the Grips – The Life of James H. Williams and the Red Caps of Grand Central Terminal and ends on page 124 with Terminal Town: An Illustrated Guide to Chicago’s Airports, Bus Depots Train Stations and Steamship Landings, 1939-present. ENDMARKER features UP 4014 at Kansas City Union Station. This book is in as-published condition right out of the printer’s shipping carton (also from Kansas City).
