    Description

Your bid is for the Railway and Locomotive Historical Society RAILROAD HISTORY No. 144, with a publication cover date of SPRING 1981. This digest-sized book measures 15.3 by 22.8 cm and contains 128 pages, plus the wraps. Note: the cover is in horizontal format, the rest of the book is not! Editor Robert C. Post notes with satisfaction the very favorable reception to the previous Great Northern Railway roster issue. And notes that those who deprecate an all-roster issue have a valid point of view. And that this issue in hand is sufficiently diversified. The cover watercolor by Elizabeth Tone Summers shows the John Bull in its halcyon days on the Camden & Amboy. GUEST EDITORIAL: HISTORY AND THE RAILROAD PHOTOGRAPHER by Herbert H. Harwood fills 3 pages. RESURRECTION: THE JOHN BULL STEAMS AGAIN AT 150 YEARS OF AGE by John H. White, Jr. fills 20 pages and addresses the question of how long will a steam locomotive last? Sort of...  10 photos and a drawing are included. MISSISSIPPI'S SOUTHERN RAILROAD: A STUDY IN PERILS AND PERSERVERANCE by James A. Ward fills 19 pages with a typical southern story as railway capital went elsewhere in the 19th century. A Locomotive Roster follows featuring power of the Vicksburg & Jackson and predecessor lines and those built for Southern (Mississippi) along with two representative drawings. THE LOUISIANA & ARKANSAS RAILWAY: STRUCTURE AND OPERATION IN THE AGE OF STEAM by A. E. Brown starts off, as ALL railway articles should, with a fine system map and fills 10 pages with text and 2 photos. Then comes LOCOMOTIVES OF THE LOUISIANA & ARKANSAS AND COMPONENT LINES by William D. Edson filling 16 more pages, including 20 photographs. THE NEW HAVEN'S G-4a TEN-WHEELERS: SOME PERSONAL EXPERIENCES by Arthur M. Bixby, Sr. fills 9 pages with the I-was-there writings of this great lover of steam locomotion. 3 photos are includes and then we move on to: NEW HAVEN TEN-WHEELERS: ALL-TIME ROSTER compiled by Bixby and filling a further 7 pages with fine-print rosters and 6 more photos, two of which I've attempted to reproduce below. Notes & Queries, Book Reviews, Book Notes, Recent Articles and Dissertations and Memorial Notices finish this issue. I mention Linn H. Westcott often in my writings and here is his obituary on page 127. A marvelous man he was....  This book is in excellent, as-published condition, directly from the printer’s shipping carton.
