1812 Mexican Independence War "EL DOLIENTE DE HIDALGO" BannerThis is a REPLICA - the historic original (picture below) is well guarded at the Chapultepec Castle in Mexico City
A small background info on this "Insurgentes" - Flag and its 1812 context:
At 11 in the morning of that January 2 1812,, the royalist troops advanced on the rebels inZitácuaro, their superiority in men and arms was overwhelming, the fall of the Villa was a matter of hours; however, the viceroy's troops faced much fierce resistance than they expected.
Among the insurgent troops, a small battalion made up mostly of peasants from Tierra Caliente, the Michoacán Provinces and Mexico, commonly known as "pintos," who advanced under the cover of a strange banner, attracted attention.
A red and black banner that presented very peculiar symbols: on a red woolen cloth on the upper part, it bears the legend "The Mourners of Hidalgo" and, on the lower part, a second legend that says " From á 12 ". as the main element, a black cross in the center of which is a skull and behind it two cross-shaped tibiae.
This amount of symbols have been given to multiple interpretations, including Masonic, esoteric and religious, but one in which they all agree is the following: The war to Death declared by the "Mourners of Hidalgo" to his murderers. The mission of the regiment, created by José María Cos, was to defend the rebellion but, above all - to avenge the death of Miguel Hidalgo.
The banner taken when crushing the insurgents in Zitácuaro served as a trophy for the royalists and today it is one of the treasures on display at the Chapultepec Castle in Mexico City.
