Description
Your bid is for the
February 1950 issue of the BOSTON AND MAINE RAILROAD MAGAZINE. This
digest-sized publication measures 15.7 by 23.4 cm and contains the usual 32
pages. The front cover, all of pages 2 & 3 and 2/3rds of page 4 all deal
with the FREIGHT HANDLED BY CONVEYOR in Gardner, Massachusetts. Gardner was,
still is, an important furniture manufacturing center and immense amounts of
finished freight was shipped out by the B&M and lumber shipped in by the
dozens of carloads weekly. The trick with the outbound furniture, generally
LCL, was careful and rapid handling and this was the first such conveyor system
installed by any railroad east of the Mississippi River. Three more
photographs, in addition to the cover, help to understand the system. Boston to
Wells River psgr trains are now dieselized due to CPR purchases. ROURKE AND
GLACY MADE VICE PRESIDENTS fills a page with 4 fine photos of F.W. Rourke, J.W.
Smith, G.F. Glacy and W.S. Trowbridge. PROMOTIONS IN THREE DEPARTMENTS is
followed by HANDLING OF CHRISTMAS MAIL WINS PRAISE that includes a rather
impressive photograph of an impossible-to-move-appearing mountain of mail. Buffalo
is featured in OUR OFF LINE AGENCIES with H.B. Church and L.A. Fraser shown in
a nice photo. HIGHWAY BOX CARS vs. THE RAILROADS fills the next 2 pages. TWO
50-YEAR WOMEN AT HAVERHILL honors Mrs. Mabel Choate and Mrs. Mary S. Boudreau,
plus four men at Melrose, Athol, Mechanicville and Marblehead. HOW WE'RE DOING
shows a small income of 3,427 for November 1949. AMONG THOSE RETIRING lists
about 16 men and shows 5 photos. LEGION POST NAMED FOR B. and M. HEROES tells
of McCarthy - Hagerty Post No. 445. THE SUGGESTION SYSTEM lists another 25
employees by name and general location and occupation. Two photos show Thomas
A. Connolly, agent at Arlington Heights, and the wooden toys he makes for needy
children. WITH THE BOSTON AND MAINE FAMILY fills pages 19-30 and includes 32
photos, including Suncook Valley Railroad No. 2 shown below. Also a very fine
photograph taken at the Sanbornville, New Hampshire, Engine House, around 1900
graces the bottom 2/5th of page 26 with employees identified. Page 28 shows
B&M and MEC men getting instructions on ALCO locomotives at the plant in
Schenectady. Walter True I knew well. Page 31 has 5 interesting photos of life
aboard a B&M Maintenance of Way train a half century ago. All employees are
identified by name and occupation. The rear cover supports Brotherhood Week
sponsored by the National Conference of Christians and Jews. This magazine is
in excellent, museum-quality condition. Your satisfaction guaranteed. Please
see my other eBay auctions for more rare and scarce railroad paper. I provide
personal service without silly eBay games like waiting for payment before
shipping, mandated payment methods, clumsy communications and charging for
return shipping. Please check my feedback and DSR's. Everything I sell is
POSTPAID USA, so the winning bid is what you pay, plus eBay’s state tax if
applicable, unless you want special services. I normally ship first day after
auction ends IF I have a payment plan & a proper shipping address, or you
are a recent previous buyer. Thank you for reading. Alden Dreyer, 91 Reynolds
