Description
For sale is an antique railroad payroll ledger that dates to before the Civil War. The first date in this 143-page hardcover book is September 1857; the final date is April 1863. After researching information on the internet, I believe it contains the names of and wages earned by employees of one or more railroads in southern and central Indiana — probably the Evansville and Crawfordsville RR, which began service in November 1854 between Evansville, Warrick County and Terre Haute and extended service to Rockville and Parke County in 1860. This ledger was purchased at an estate sale in southern Indiana. It measures 6 1/2 by 16 inches and is in good condition overall. The spine is missing but the contents are in very good shape and filled with a wealth of invaluable historical and genealogical information. The employees are listed under several railroad job headings, including transportation, engineers, car shops, yards and firemen. Terre Haute and Rockville are specifically mentioned toward the back of the book. This ledger is extremely rare and deserves to be in a museum.See my listings for other vintage items, including historical publications.
