Description
...oil-burning, welded-boilered 4-4-0's ordered by the National Park Service and built by the O'Connor Engineering Laboratories of Costa Mesa, CA. Replicas of Central Pacific No. 60, the Jupiter (Schenectady 1868) and Union Pacific 119 (Rogers 1868), they steam up to each other several times daily in the summer at the Promontory National Historic Site (55 miles northwest of Ogden, Utah, on the north shore of Great Salt Lake) in a recreation of the joining of America's first transcon rails on May 10, 1869. Gerald M. Best served as engineering consultant, and several subcontractors (from U.S. Steel to Southern Railway) participated on the project that previously was entrusted to Virginia & Truckee Baldwin stand-ins at 100th anniversary held in 1969.Original, Vintage 1-Page Magazine Advertisement
